Default Web - Youtube file sizes

Default Web - Youtube file sizes
I have a 430 MB .mpg (note 3 letter extension) 46 minute video

We've sliced up the video using openshot to the following .mpeg (note 4 letter extension) using the Web - Youtube - Med default setting

8 minute segment - 245 MB
5 minute or so segments - 172 MB and 153 MB
1 minute segment - 32 MB

The sliced pieces seem pretty large given the original 430 MB size - approx 10 MB per minute.

For curiosity, I downloaded the larger 8 minute segment (245 upload size) from Youtube using the FlashVideoDownloader addon to Firefox and the downloaded 8 minute Flash file was 48 MB

I'm wondering if I'm using the right setting for exporting videos to be uploaded to youtube or if I could retain the original quality with smaller file sizes with a different setting. The cumulative size of the slices that I uploaded would be much larger than the original 48 minute video from the camera.

Ideas?

It's not something I've ever looked into in depth before, so it's hard to say. You could try choosing the 'low' quality setting and see what difference it makes.

But the settings we are using for the output are what is recommended by You Tube. The encoding is done by ffmpeg - maybe there are some flags that could be set during encoding which would help.

Just to know. Could you tell us what version of Distribution, ffmpeg, Openshot and MlT are you using ?
Thanks.

I'm running Openshot 1.4.2 on knoppix 6.7.1

I built the Knoppix USB boot drive from the knoppix 6.7.1 DVD. The upgrade from to 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 seemed a little strange because of the parameter "testing", but I did as suggested on the knoppix forum:
http://knoppix.net/forum/threads/29655- ... t=openshot

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -t testing install openshot openshot-doc

How would I go about determining the version o0f ffmpeg that I am running? Sorry, not sure what MIT means.

Thanks for the help.

On a side note. I'm not "stuck" on any flavor of linux. I've tried
AV Linux 5.0
Zorin OS 5.1 Core
Puppy Linux 5.2.8
Linux Mint 12
OpenSUSE 12.1
Debian Live 6.0.3
PCLinuxOS Gnome 2010.12
Knoppix 6.7 aqnd 6.7.1
Ubuntu 11.10 and 11.04

I don't claim to know much about any of the above and knoppix has been some work to get some things working (like real firefox), but I seem to have move overall luck with knoppix and openshot seems to run well with it.

AV Linux should work very well, it is optimised for video/audio - unless of course you have some hardware in your PC that the Linux Kernel doesn't like. That seems an awful lot of distros not working very well :o

Totally agree with Andy and if my memory is good, Knoppix is based on Debian too like AV Linux but this one is optimised at several levels.
