New install won't open previously saved .osp file

Postby CaronMargarete » Sat Oct 08, 2011 6:54 am

I have had a lot of problems getting the new version to work on 11.04, but after a reading a stack on this forum it seems to now open, but I cannot get it to open a previously saved .osp file.

The program opens as normal and I save a new file- although I've not tried to actually work on that file- I want to open one I've been working on for a while (with a previous version). Idea's as to why it might freeze and need a force quit to exit?

 Disclaimer- please help me by keeping your language for a laywoman. It would help to have steps, images, and clear instructions because I know some, understand less. I can provide terminal information if you tell me what I need to try & what will happen...

Thanks in advance,
Caron.

Hi Caron,

You have created this file (.osp) with a previous version of Openshot but which one ?

If it is the 1.3.0 there are none problem but if it is a previous version of this one (i.e 1.2.2 or 1.13), it could be one. Because, before this version, we were using two types of files. I don't remember the exact terms but one was a binary. Like people seems to have a lot of problems with, we have done some modifications in Openshot for not having this kind of problems.
I am afraid that you could not open your .osp file.
The only workaround that it comes to my mind is to have on a computer (if you have another one) this old version and export it. After, in the actual version, to create a new project and re-import the file obtained with the old version and continue your work.

Hmmm damn! Looks like I'm starting again! Oh well, thankfully it's only one file!
Appreciate your help,
Caron.

You have perhaps a workaround for saving your work if you have installed Openshot by the PPA. :o

There are a tool (and it is not only for Openshot but all the softwares that you have installed with a PPA). which is a great tool : ppa-purge.

This tool can help you to come back at a previous version. Like this, you can test a superior version and if you are not happy with this one for any sort of reasons, you can come back at the other.

Like this you could save (export) your work and update at the new version, create another new project and import your stuff.

Here the command line :
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

or you can use Synaptic (graphical way) and search ppa and after install it.

Once time you have done that you must know the adress of the ppa that you want to desinstall. Say that our normal (=stable) ppa, type the following lines:
Code: Select all
sudo ppa-purge ppa:jonoomph/openshot-edge

And you come back to the previous version. Normaly, no problem with the dependencies already installed.

Good luck.

Thank you Cenwen, for the response and the time it took you to detail the information for me. I have actually just started working on the video again. I hadn't done anything extensive or difficult so it's not been hard to get to the last point of the previous file- just time consuming!

With such a detailed response I feel certain you'll have helped someone, if not me.
Many thanks,
Caron.
