Installation error: No formats or codecs were found.....

Postby Tullo » Mon Apr 26, 2010 1:20 pm

Hello,
I'm trying to install Openshot on my Ubuntu 9.10, I've read the previous posts about that but I can't solve.
first I had MLT problem, that I solved copyng the link like this:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libmlt++.so.0.5.0 /usr/lib/libmlt++.so.2

but now I receive this error:
giorgiatullo@family:~$ openshot
--------------------------------
OpenShot (version 1.1.3)
--------------------------------
Process no longer exists: 13947. Creating new pid lock file.
A new frmMain has been created
No formats or codecs were found. Please check the OpenShot preferences and configure the 'melt' command name.
Segmentation fault

Melt is installed.
I have purged kdenlive and cinerella installation and disableb akira repo.
what can I try now?

thanks for your help!

Hi,

No formats or codecs were found. Please check the OpenShot preferences and configure the 'melt' command name.

This message said that you must check all your codecs, do you use the ffmpeg 's version of Medibuntu repositories ? If no, install this version, she brings the support for the AAC codec and the AVCHD(and the 3g).
Look at this threads :
[list]http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=33
http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4[list]
after try yet to launch Openshot. If you have an error style pid lock remove the file .openshot by :
Code: Select all
rm .openshot
and after run Openshot, it will be created automatically the first time. But normaly, i don't think that you must do that. :x

Thanks for your reply,
I have the 4:0.5+ vn20090706-2ubuntu2.2 version of ffmpeg installed, seems not from medibuntu but I don't find that package in Medibuntu repo.
All other dependancies are installed except that mlt-python that I dont find.
Anyway... I'm still trying.

Just install the Medibuntu repository and after the update install ffmpeg. It will be change automatically your ffmpeg version by this is. She is just only complete (and questions of licence too  )
Hum mlt-python. It is not now python-mlt ?. Think to look the Edit, the project move a lot for each new version (and that's not finished  )

Hi,
had the same error after solving other problems with openshot 1.1.3 at fedora 12. The solution: I changed at the openshot settings the melt command string from "melt" to "mlt-melt", because melt is originally a link of the freeze command, which has nothing to do with openshot (as I understand).

Good luck,
Reiner

melt is the MLT command line video player. Openshot uses it to determine what codecs/formats are available on your system.

Try runnning this command in the terminal, and post the output:

Code: Select all
melt noise -consumer avformat vcodec=list

Also check you have the frei0r-plugins package installed.

Sure you have ffmpeg from medibuntu ?
I have the same errors after having the medibuntu repo added and ffmpeg installed. I checked the available ffmpeg versions and there was no installable candidate from medibuntu. I went to the medibuntu site to check. Also there I did not saw ffmpeg in the list of available packages for ubuntu lucid 10.04.

Any other source for ffmpeg suitable for open shot ?

Well that is the command that is used in Openshot, so not sure why you get an error. What is your version of MLT/melt?

What you need are the libavcodec-extra/unstripped libavformat-extra/unstripped packages. Openshot doesn't specifically require ffmpeg itself, just the libraries (via mlt).

The extra/unstripped packages install restricted codecs (such as h.264, mp3 etc.).

Same result.
Starting openshot in terminal gives this :
~$ openshot
--------------------------------
OpenShot (version 1.1.3)
--------------------------------
Process no longer exists: 3272. Creating new pid lock file.
A new frmMain has been created

I have these from medibuntu :
libavcodec-extra-52
libavcodec-unstripped-52
libavformat-extra-52
libavformat-unstripped-52
Openshot is coming from the ubuntu lucid repo.

I have openshot installed on a laptop as well. There it opens normal and finds the codecs. But it crashes often.

Hi,
Just a thought.
Have you check the others dependencies like here : http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=372
I have openshot installed on a laptop as well. There it opens normal and finds the codecs. But it crashes often.

What is the reason ? Put the output please. it is a bit weird. More details. Thanks

Finally figured out a solution to the original posters problem (which was my problem as well on several occasions, even in 1.2.2 and ubuntu 10.10).

At least for me, this problem was caused when I tried to upgrade mltmelt to the newest version that was not in the repos.

How did I get things back working?

Completely remove melt from the package manager (or whatever is your prefered method). This will get rid of openshot as well, that is fine. Now look for all mlt related packages and completely remove anything related to mltmelt. Now do a search for 'mlt' and remove ALL mlt related packages, folders and files that are left over. For safe measure I recommend also deleting the .openshot folder in your home directory.

After this, reinstall openshot. Everything should now work properly again.
