It doesn't matter how soon you get replies if you have to wait 24 hours to ask them.

Do you have any idea what is involved in running a forum in your spare time, at your own expense, and trying to keep the endless queue of spammers out?

The fact that you have to wait before you can make for your first post is a worthwhile price to pay for having the forum spam free.

Well, I have an idea, and that's why I prefer to maintain Google Group. =) Speaking about spammers, does reCaptcha help? Can you just make user's first post pre-moderated? So that users can register successfully, and even post, but they post won't appear until moderator approves their account.

You'd still be waiting up to 24 hours for the first post to be moderated, so it wouldn't be any quicker.

The post will be quickier, and that's a difference. I can ask the question while it is fresh and not 24 hours later when I probably busy with other stuff.
