Add new custom effects

Postby StrayEddy » Thu Feb 17, 2011 4:57 pm

Hi everyone,

I just downloaded and tried your application.
OpenShot has a lot of potential but the list of effects is not quite there.

I would like to create new effects, for myself, and if it works well give it to the developpers of OpenShot.
Could anybody give me info about how to create new effects, where do i have to look what files can i take as reference.

I ll want to create an effect with parameters so that users can change the output, not just a hardcoded effect

FYI: First effect i would like to try is a shaking ground effect (quake, bump).

Thank you a lot in advance for your replies

The effects in Openshot are provided by the frei0r effects library, or by MLT. There are more effects in the frei0r pacakge than are currently exposed by Openshot - some have proved unreliable in the past, some we're not sure how to implement in the best way etc. To expose a frei0r effect in Openshot, an xml file needs to be created that includes the frei0r parameters - you can find examples in the sourcecode on Launchpad.

If you want to create an effect, then you should probably look at doing it in Frei0r - this would make it potentially available to other video editors that use the same library. But you should check frei0r anyway, they may already have a shaking ground effect.

I see in OpenShot the use off MLT and frei0r effects library.

I don't think i ll create another effect but maybe i will add the frei0r.scale0tilt effect (didn't see it in your current effects list), cause it seems quite helpful to create a earthquake like effect.

If it works well, i ll give it to the developers.
