audio viz, a jog wheel, vol level control wrt time

Postby chaintong » Thu Jan 07, 2010 3:49 pm

I have been using Ubuntu for over a year as an alternative to winxp. In that last year I have only downloaded video from my camera and have yet to make any videos. This is in part due to time pressure but mainly because the only contender to Video Studio (my previous NLE) was cinelerra which I found too hard to learn and incapable for operating more than an hour with out some sort of crash.

So far I am really impressed by Openshot! A few things I'd like to add on my wish list. I looked at launchpad but could not work out where to add it.

-1- A method of seeing the audio and video separately (I know this has been said before but I'd like to add this too – the waveform is very useful for finding difficult cuts.)

-2- I think a jog wheel would be useful... linked to the wheel on the mouse? Video studio had a graphical one and I found it very useful to get to the exact point I wanted to splice. Ideally this needs to be combined with some kind of time/frame indicator for the razor so that if I wanted to I could type in a time, and that would be the point at which the razor would 'cut' the track.

The most importantone for me is a mechanism to change the volume of the audio during the track: the most obvious use is when I have video (with audio) and a sound track. During the phases when no one is talking on the video, the soundtrack is louder than those sections when the there is conversation. Videostudio had a very simple graphical means to manipulate the volume with respect to time.

Keep up the great work and thank you for your time and effort

Hello Chaintong and welcome
Thanks for your suggestions/features. Personnally, i don't know Visualstudio; is it Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 Ultimate ? :)

I can't find it at the moment, but your request number 1 has already been logged.

As for number 2, I don't think that's been logged before, I'll log that once I'm done cleaning up the bugs in Launchpad.

And volume control - I guess you mean something like a line drawn over the top of the clip on the timeline that can be adjusted up or down at various points?

I am also quite excited to find openshot as a previous user of VideoStudio on windows. FYI, VideoStudio is now owned by Sony, and is a cut down version of their Vegas suite.

It provides a means for putting an audio "envelope" on an audio track. You can click "points" onto the envelope line, which can then be adjusted up to +5 dB, and down to 0 dB. A pan envelope for adjusting stereo balance can also be applied, but I have not used the latter personally.

It is also possible to apply fades by click and drag of the end line of a clip to create a quadrant at the beginning and end of each clip, and different curves can be applied to each fade (cosine/hyperbolic - I think). I'm not suggesting the latter be copied, but could be kept in mind as potential future enhancements. The same trick of dragging the keyframe into a quadrant can be used on video fades also.

Thanks anyway for a program with great potential.
