Observations on v1.0 after a quick play

Postby chaintong » Mon Jan 11, 2010 12:36 am

I've just spent an couple of hours playing with version 1.0. I'm really impressed, and keen to add in my views/help... but they are added purely in the spirit of GNU & FSM so...
(a) they are my views and wishlist only …
(b) not intended as criticism, I fully appreciate that this project is done in peoples spare time.

So here is a slam down of my views...

-1- when I move a clip around on the time line I would like to move it's transitions and effects with it.

-2- Edit / undo : not in V1.0 what were you thinking ;)

-3- I crashed it – no I really did...(screen just disappeared): I was adding a bunch of effects on to some jpg I had on my time line. I had old film, then added rotate, then took rotate off, added a couple more (I can remember which) but I was adding them and removing then from the properties window (not by dragging them onto the time line) I added Echo and BANG! -
My request: where is the log stored that I can send you guys – at the very least a trace of the commands entered – this could be combined with my request for a Edit and undo above!

-4- Adding 2 effects on top of each other . Doesn't really work, Ie I want to dissolve into to a jpg, but at the same time I'd like to add the mountains effect (over a slight longer period so that some parts of the jpg come into view a little later (apologies if this is a RTFM)

-5- the delete, home, end keys work don't not work (i.e. if I click on any object on my time line and press delete it would seem intuitive (to me at least) if the the object as removed form the time line.

-6- I have noticed that the save icon gets great out (and remains so) despite me making changes to the project. File / save still works ( I checked)

-7- I noticed that adding markers introduces are a really nasty “ccrsstzz” sound when you play the time line across them ? I removed them added some more and it didn';t happen again.

-8- I'm finding it quite hard to make my different tracks line up (in terms of start and end times). Id really like to be able to select a clip, go to properties, and under general be able to manually type into a text box the clip start point. I then need another text box for the end point. A further check box will enable box text boxes, and by entering values in both you will effectively re-size the clip. This level of accuracy for the start point becomes important (to me) when using a waveform visualiser (as per my first requests on different post) because I need action in my video to occur on the beat of the sound track.

-9- I can also crash it by selecting export … Youtube HD, then export. Interestingly the advanced options work fine for me

-10- This is not a bug but a feature request: I would like to be able to 'undock' the the main areas of the main window. What I mean is that I'd like to be able to position and resize the 3 areas (preview, time line and 'Assets (project files etc) independently on my desktop. Primary I like my preview window to be full screen and my other 2 windows to be on a separate monitor

cheers

Hi chaintong,

Thanks for your thoughts.

We will soon be working out what we will be working on for the next release, but we need to spend a bit of time cleaning up Launchpad and the bug tracker first.

But a few quick answers:

(3) A bug has been logged regarding crashing when adding effects (the 'Water' effect in this case) to jpg files. If you can add anything to that bug report, please do so (even if you just record if you use 32/64 bit etc).

https://bugs.launchpad.net/openshot/+bug/505136

(5) There are key bindings for Ctrl + Home & Ctrl + End, which take you to the start/end of the timeline (this is in the manual - didn't you read it ;) )

(6) The save icon should become active again as soon as an action is taken that modifies the project - I've never noticed it remain greyed out, we'll have to see if anyone else reports this.

(9) This maybe related to libx264 problems in Ubuntu.

(10) GTK has been pretty weak in the past regarding this, but I think there have been some improvements there, so it might be possible now.

Once we've finished cleaning up Launchpad I'll log the relevant feature requests.

Cheers,
Andy.

I'd like to second #10...I usually work with two monitors, and that would let me use an entire display for the track list

Also, for deleting a clip on the timeline you can use Shift-click to delete. It´s faster then right-click and choose delete.
