Fedora RPM

There's a test spec file and RPM for Fedora at http://killobyte.com/openshot/ (0.9.54). Tested on Fedora 12 + rpmfusion.

That's great news.

Not knowing too much about RPM's, what files need to be distributed? Is it all of them including the .spec file?

Is it OK to publish your link elsewhere (have you got the bandwidth) or do you want us to host it somewhere - either on the main site or the site here?

Thanks for doing this.

Andy.

No problem!

You can link it directly or host it elsewhere, whichever works best for you. The .rpm is the actual install file and the only one that needs to be distributed. The .src.rpm is normally used for a recompile to generate the .rpm but there are no compiled parts. The separate spec file is just if someone wants to reference it e.g. to make an official version. It is also contained in the src.rpm.

WHERE is my Fedora 8 desktop after a new installation on a laptop? I installed Fedora 8 on a slightly older laptop. Everything seem to installed perfectly. However, when I reboot the system, the fancy desktop doesn't come up. I just get the command line prompt to login! Did I miss a step? Shouldn't the GNOME desktop automatically come up on a reboot? This laptop has 128mb of memory, is that enough ram?

Hello vadenasy
i don't know fedora but for an Gnome enviromment, 128 Mo of memory is not enought, 256 is le mini that you must use to launch gnome properly. You Should try xcfe (and i'm not sure but it can) and lxde (it's the better choice ) and works well. Good luck. ;)

Does startx at the prompt bring up the desktop? Not sure what this has to do with open shot, but make sure the default runlevel is set to 5 in /etc/inittab. Also even on an older laptop I would probably install Fedora 12 with xfce.

Humm I'm not sure that i have well understand the question. Startx ? hum you haven't a graphical session ? it's not the fault of openshot but you have certainly not enought memory to do that. Try the touchs F1 at F6 if something is happen ( a UI environnement appair ? ).
I think that the best solution for you is to use a minimal system with a light desktop environemment like XFCE(try xubuntu perhaps),lxde, fluxbox, enlightement.
Hum a distribution using enlightement or lxde is certainly the best solution.
You have another solution. Like you have not a desktop environnement, try to install one in console if your distribution can do that. Make inquieries you in the documentation or in the forum of your distribution.
You have another possibility, "not conventionall" try anyone distribution for notebokk, it's light.
Good luck i hope that 's help you. :D

Re: Fedora RPM

Postby grof » Tue Jan 12, 2010 12:15 pm

Hello,
At first I want to introduce myself.

I'm officially Fedora's packager for Kdenlive, MLT and some other packages.
In a good manner, I signup OpenShot package on RPM fusion, and now I waiting for review:
https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=993

I looked at currently package for Fedora of OpenShot 1.0 and I must to say that this package has many errors and warnings (checked with rpmlint tool for checking RPMs).
So, I'm suggesting to use mine packages (no errors and warnings) for currently supported Fedoras (11&12) until they come to RPM Fusion repo.

Links to mine packages are:
http://wiki.open.hr/~zpintar/fedora-12/ ... noarch.rpm
http://wiki.open.hr/~zpintar/fedora-11/ ... noarch.rpm

SRC:
http://wiki.open.hr/~zpintar/fedora-12/ ... 12.src.rpm

regards,
Zarko

Despite his obvious pride of authorship, he's probably right that you should use his rpm. Mine was never intended it to be the official rpm, only to get it in the hands of Fedora users until rpmfusion decided to make a release. That's good news if OpenShot will be (un)officially coming to Fedora.

OK, no bad feelings :)

Just one digression: RPM Fusion can not decide anything (this is only a repo :) ). Packagers - volunteers deciding! If some packager decides to package some program, than he sends his work on rpmfusion's bugzilla.
If the packager is sponsored packager, than process go faster. Some other sponsored packager must do a review of package, and after approving, package goes to repository.

My pride has nothing to do with this. Indeed, I invite you to become a sponsored packager on Fedora. In this way you can learn a lot about packaging. ;)

Hello grof
Hum Openshot in Fedora 12 AND Fedora 11, officialy sponsored ? YES

A little problem but is it just for Fedora or for all the rpm distributions ? :o
In all cases, thanks both for your help, it will render Openshot more accessible and better for the Fedora's users. :D

grof,

Fair enough, I was reacting to the insinuation that I didn't make my release in "a good manner". But notice you said "sponsored packager". I realize why this step is necessary, however I myself have no time for such politics. That is why I posted it on this forum and linked the specs on rpmfusions wishlist - so that someone else with the proper connections could reference it if desired.

My own digression... Personally, I deplore the state of packaging in Fedora and linux in general. Software being in such repositories should be a helpful addition, not a requirement to running software. In a perfect world, packaging standards would be developed between all the major distros, among the rpm distros at the very least.

OK, but please note, these packages are not yet official, it will be when they come to RPM Fusion. They are pre-official now ;)

Only for Fedora. OpenSuse uses different naming guidance for packages, so there may be problems with dependencies.

As I'm leaving Fedora packaging (family and personal reasons) it will be good that someone takes my spec file and do repackaging of OpenShot 1.1

kind regards,
