No sound no audio openshot avlinux

Postby ibexslam » Sun May 01, 2011 11:23 pm

Things were going swimmingly until I swam into a wall.

I'm a new user of both AVlinux and OpenShot. Really like both! I've found I can do some very cool things with my video clips. However, I can't hear any sound from either my audio or video files in OpenShot. I tried a test mixdown/rendering, and the audio was definitely there, so it's in the pipeline somewhere, but it's not getting from OpenShot to the audio output.

Other applications have sound without a problem.

I've tried the solution proposed on this page, but it didn't work for me:
viewtopic.php?f=26&t=584

Suggestions, anyone? Any helpful tidbit will be appreciated.

That looks like an SDL problem - if there is no sound when using the melt command line player, then that would confirm it.

Is the JACK audio server running when you are playing the files in Openshot? If so, can you try stopping that? I'm not sure if AVLinux uses Pulseaudio, so you might need variants of the package libsdl1.2debian. Before changing anything on your install you might want to hook up with Glenn over at the AVLinux forums, he'll know more than me about the audio setup on AVLinux (I only ever use it for audio production using JACK).

Hi Andy,

You may be onto something. I didn't get any sound out of melt or ffplay on the command line. Got a weird graphic output, though...no idea if that's normal or not. ffplay complained about a "missing header" in the mp3's I've tried.

I've got a discussion going on over at the AVlinux forum about this with GMaq. (http://www.remastersys.com/forums/index ... pic=1420.0) I've tried it with and without JACK. Doesn't seem to make a difference. There's sound in the mixdown/rendering, so the problem seems to be in OpenShot's audio output chain, if that's the right way to put it. G thinks there might be a problem with a recent ffmpeg update.

Any idea about what to do about an SDL problem? I've got the most recent libsdl thing onboard, the one with all the...uh...the big one. (Yes, I'm that ignorant!)

If melt or ffplay cannot play the sound of your files, then Openshot won't be able to either - wouldn't know what to suggest regarding ffmpeg :-(

Not to worry. Turns out that OpenShot didn't do anything wrong. I did, though I didn't know it at the time. You know how some people have just enough knowledge to be dangerous? I'm one of them. I updated everything on my AVlinux system, which I now know is not a good idea...apparently I disturbed a very carefully arranged house of cards. You know how that goes!

And I'm back.

I did a fresh reinstall of my AVLinux operating system. When I started OpenShot up, it was working, with audio. There, I fixed it!, I thought to myself. But within a few minutes of loading and manipulating some tracks, the sound was no more. I've tried restarting the program, and rebooting the OS, but that didn't help. It's as if I inadvertantly switched the audio off somehow, but the track audio(s) were switched on, the clip audio switches were on, under properties, audio was enabled, and my clips weren't stretched (I believe that would also kill the sound). I'm running version 1.3.0~alpha1.

Suggestions, anyone?

OK, my latest attempt to fix the sound problem did not work out at all.

Following the following advice, I upgraded OpenShot from version 1.3.0 to 1.3.1:
http://geekconnection.org/remastersys/f ... opic=509.0

Now, I don't know if I have sound or not...clicking the play button no longer plays anything at all. The slider just sits there. The video's tab toggles from "Video Preview" to "Video Preview (Paused)", but nothing else happens.

Urgh. Am I going to have to boot into That Operating System From Redmond to edit my video? Say it ain't so!

[time passes...]

Hold on! My video clip started playing after a pause of several minutes (!)...and there's no sound. Dang.

...and the clip stopped playing before it got to the end. What the heck?

I hope no ;)

I don't know exactly but you seems to have a problem with the previous after at different levels, in others words the sound. There is a problem with the last version of MLT (0.70) who is nearly corrected by the MLT Team (see here : https://bugs.launchpad.net/openshot/+bug/770316). I am not sure that will resolve your problem but it can be benefit for you. The package will be soon available.

Bonjour, Cenwen,

That could definitely be a problem. I'll just have to hold off until the updated version of mlt is ready. Good thing I'm not on a deadline! The world will have to wait a little longer for my video.

Thanks for letting me know about that.

I should just jump in here and mention that I've got a solution, or workaround, or whatever you want to call it.

I removed AVlinux from my usb flash drive, and used unetbootin (from here: sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/files/) (The older version that's out there doesn't have an option for persistence) to install Ubuntu 10.04.2 (the latest LTS desktop, 64 bit).

I found that, before installing OpenShot, it was necessary to enter this into the terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openshot.developers
...which, I'm told, is "for the developers but actually, it is the same version than the official (i.e. for everybody)," for what it's worth.

I was then able to load OpenShot without a problem. Fired it up, gave it a brief go, and, so far, so good.
