Openshot 1.3.1 problems

Postby Venomous Woe » Mon Jul 25, 2011 6:18 pm

Hello. I'm a new user to OpenShot. It looks like a great piece of software, but there are some usability issues that are getting in the way.

The first one is that playing back the timeline in video preview is very inconsistent, sometimes working, but sometimes producing white flashes with no sound. It's also very choppy.

But the big issue happens when I export the video. Openshot seems to speed up the video clip during export, filling up the rest of the video space with a blank white background. The sound is unaffected. That seems to be the case when I play it back in VLC or any other GUI player.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

EDIT: Just tested the video with ffplay and melt, and I get the same issues. Video plays too fast, ends too early, with the rest of the video clip occupied by white space.

Hi,

The first one is that playing back the timeline in video preview is very inconsistent, sometimes working, but sometimes producing white flashes with no sound. It's also very choppy.

This problem comes from MLT our Video Framework and it has been resolved in their last version (0.7.4) but that's not the only one. You could find the instructions here http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=758at the end of the Ubuntu part. So you should update your version of MLT and re-try your tests again.
And post here if you have yet some problems and which ones.
Thanks.

Well, I updated to the latest version of MLT, but I'm still having problems. Playback is slower now, and video still doesn't encode properly. Instead of white space, it just shows the last frame, but the playback is still too fast.

I ran ffmpeg -i on the video in question, and there are two lines that interest me, and may point to the problem. One line says: WARNING: library configuration mismatch. The other says: Seems stream 0 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate: 30000.00 (30000/1) -> 29.97 (30000/1001)

Any idea how to fix this?

UPDATE: These problems only seem to affect AVI files. I recorded and imported a MPEG and it played back properly when exported (although it seemed to extend the footage a bit). It also plays back properly when in OpenShot as well.

Here you have a thread on this question (i.e identification video files) : http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=371.
Your output seems to be strange but could you put all the output.

Are you sure, that you have the version 0.7.4 ? check in synaptic if melt is 0.7.4.

And, no, I don't have version 0.7.4. I have version 0.7.2.0ubuntu0~su

So it is normal that you have yet some trouble with the preview,.. this version of MLT (0.7.2) done that Openshot is difficult to use. Install the Sunab's PPA, only way to have the last version of the frei0r-plugins and MLT. As you have already seen, MLT is composed of several libraries.
Hum the error is for me. I have just chekced and It is normal that you have not the 0.7.4 of MLT. I found it in a special PPA of Sunab and I must said that :
    - I was beliving it was in the normal PPA
    - I hesite to give you the experimental PPA for grabing it
Anyway, you must de-activate it after either you will have some problems and you must only just done the update of MLT. Either you should wait the update in the Official repository of Sunab.
If I can be helpful for you, here the adress : https://launchpad.net/~sunab/+archive/kdenlive-svn?field.series_filter=natty

At first look, you have well two track, one video (aka 0.0.) in Mpeg4 and a second audio (0.01) in Mp3.
Have you installed the version of ffmpeg available in the Medibuntu repository (see here :https://answers.launchpad.net/openshot/+faq/1040 )
You could check in Openshot in the Preferences second tab on which formats/codecs video & audio are installed. See (if you can, now with 0.7.2 correcting installed Openshot should run without none problems) if you have this formats available.

Alright, I upgraded my packages and installed the Medibuntu repository. That weird AVI encoding bug is gone. I used and exported an AVI file in Openshot, and it played normally. ffmpeg -i gives the same output though. Weird.

Unfortunately, playback on the video preview is still much too choppy. And sometimes AVI files still don't play properly in it. Where should I go from here?

By the way, will these packages fix stability issues with Openshot? I had problems with it this morning. It crashed the Plasma Desktop on my KDE system twice before crashing itself.

Same if it is difficult to understand, Openshot himself is stable and the most problems that we have come from MLT.

This remark tells me that you have not update at the last version of MLT (with the sunab PPA corresponding) in which one this issue is resolved.
So for Natty, you should have installed the following package in the version 0.7.4 (same thing that the screenshot) :
    melt
    libmlt4
    libmlt++3
    libmlt-data
    python-mlt3

Alright, I checked my package version, and all the packages you listed are version 0.7.5. I have a screenshot of Synaptic with the package versions as an attachment.

I'm starting to think that it's my CPU. My CPU's only an Atom 1.66 GHz. It might not have the power needed to play a smooth image.

Ah; Be careful with the repository that you have use to have the last version of MLT, I repeat it is an experimental repository. Think to unselected in the section repository in Synaptic.
Normally, with this kind of file, you 'll not have some problems with.
Hum I am out on this problem. :? i.e I see nothing to do.
